Under My Bed by andreasrocha Under My Bed by andreasrocha
Based on an image I did back in 2006 for a Portuguese cg forum contest titled "Under My Bed". Having grown up with movies like "E.T.", "The Goonies", "Poltergeist" and "Cat's Eye" where kid's rooms were gateways to fantasy worlds, I thought I would come up with my own homage to those wonderful movies.
I struggled somewhat on the latter stages of this painting, as I wanted to really cram the room up with toys. However, as I kept adding things they all looked out of place or seemed to detract from the main focus which were the tentacles. In the end I don't know if the image ended up feeling too "empty".
Let me know what you think, especially what you think could be improved. Always good to learn from ones mistakes. Thanks.

To exercise myself on lighting and shading especially :)

I think a stuffed animal in the foreground would add a lot. Let the stuffed animal take the position of the viewer - as a silent, immovable spectator. It heightens the identification as well as the levels of horror one can remember from being a kid, when you are completely paralyzed by your fears (irrational or otherwise).

This is really good. The lighting is awesome and the slime on the tentacles gives it an extra "eww" factor.

I think you nailed it man. Just enough to let you know this is a childs room, one of the age that would still be wondering "whats under my bed?" I think the color choices are great here too. Too often scenes like this are mired in blues and purples. Greens reds and oranges are a fresh take! very nice!

maybe a rocking horse toy at the left would show alittle bit more that it is a children's room and since it is in the darkness it wont take much attention from the tentacles

I think it might have been easier to add toys and clutter with some sort of shelving, and maybe a backed up higher view of it all. But all in all incredible painting. I love the glowing effect of the tentacles.

Never really afraid of that when I was young - all the beds I ever slept on have no bottom space, only drawers.

My bed had a bottom space but it was totally full of random books, toys and other things, but i was scared of my closet, it was right there and was big but had no light inside.
Scared me so much. :scared: revamp

I, strangely, was terrified of something appearing out of the walls, or through the door.

I was afraid of ghosts, shadows and/or demons when I was young, and younger me thought that even if I lock the door and windows, they'll just phase through walls.

My was the same, the worst part was the wind. If my mum ever forgot to lock the closet door the wind would open it in the middle of the night and slam it shut again.

Amazing. The translucent quality of the tentacles makes them really alien and exotic, the red suggests to me they might be filled with the blood of the latest victim...

It's dishonesty! ))) Everyone know, that underbed monsters can't overcome the sheet!
Than, it could be more feelers, it's too much of symmetry, order in the composition.
I don't know English well, sorry, sorry. Х((

I think it could be improved by making it darker under the bed. Also, something like this came out from under my bed once. I hacked the tentacles off with my machete. It hasn't bothered me since.

I have always heard it said, sometimes less is more. And, while you don't want the room to appear barren, I think you have more than enough on the floor. It probably would have been easier to place the usual things, other than toys, like a pair of shoes, and maybe a sock.. You know.. But, all in all, thgis is great!

Is the child tucked in sir? The sheet tucked in like this makes me wonder if the child is out of the room. Your intent? Great painting that really caught my eye and attention sir.

I respectfully submit this observation for your consideration. Your composition could stand to benefit with one more tentacle sir. Perhaps coming right at the viewer on the floor to the foreground?
